You’d be forgiven for mistaking these tiny dark orbs for peppercorns—they’re both a berry from a pepper plant. But while allspice, native to Jamaica, has never enjoyed quite the same ubiquitous popularity of black pepper, it has long been a part of the group of so-called “warming spices,” which includes cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. (The name “allspice” was meant to convey its similarity to all the above.) Fittingly, it’s a key component of jerk chicken rubs.
