Moroccan Chicken Meatballs with Homemade Tzatziki

Winner, winner, meatball dinner - these Moroccan-style meatballs are a total crowd-pleaser and were the winner of our 2024 Spicewalla Holiday Potluck! 

Loaded with aromatic spices like our Roasted Cumin, Cinnamon, Pink Peppercorns, Garlic, White Pepper, and Sumac, these juicy ground chicken meatballs combine fresh herbs and zesty homemade tzatziki for a dish that’s equal parts flavorful and refreshing 🥙✨

Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or meal-prepping for the week, these meatballs—crispy on the outside, tender on the inside—are sure to steal the show. Serve them with warm pita or naan, a squeeze of lemon, and extra tzatziki for dunking!

Ingredients

Chicken Meatballs

2 Tbs olive oil

1 red onion, finely chopped

1 lb ground chicken 

3 large garlic cloves, finely chopped

2 eggs, lightly beaten

1 cup loosely packed fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves, finely chopped

1 cup loosely packed fresh mint leaves, finely chopped

2 Tbs bread crumbs

1.5 tsp Spicewalla Roasted Cumin Powder

1 tsp Spicewalla Cinnamon Powder

.5 tsp Spicewalla pink peppercorns, ground

Salt

Lemon wedges for squeezing & garnish

 

Tzatziki Sauce

½ cup Greek plain yogurt

½ cup whole milk sour cream

½ a large cucumber, grated and juice squeezed out

1 shallot (or ½ onion), grated and juice squeezed out

1 Tbs lemon juice

2 Tbs chopped fresh dill

½ tsp Spicewalla Granulated Garlic

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp ground Spicewalla White Pepper (or Black Pepper)

¼ tsp Spicewalla Sumac

Preparation

Chicken Meatballs

  1. In a frying pan over medium-low heat, warm the olive oil. Add the onion and saute, stirring occasionally until very soft, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a bowl and let cool. 
  2. Mix the chicken, garlic, eggs, parsley, mint, bread crumbs, cumin, cinnamon, pink peppercorns, and 1 tsp salt to the bowl with the sauteed onion.
  3. Combine ingredients thoroughly with your hands. Form the mixture into balls about the size of a walnut. Place on a lightly oiled baking sheet. 
  4. Preheat the broiler.
  5. Place the meatballs about 4 inches from the heat source and broil, turning once with tongs, until brown and crispy on both sides, about 10 minutes total. Remove and transfer the meatballs to a platter.
  6. Place meatballs on a platter, along with slivered red onion and sliced cherry tomatoes.
  7. Serve with Tzaziki sauce and warmed Middle Eastern flat bread, pita, or naan

Tzatziki Sauce

Stir all ingredients together in a bowl and sprinkle with Sumac on top!
