Counter Culture Coffee's Pumpkin Spice Latte

Counter Culture Coffee's Pumpkin Spice Latte

Pumpkin spice has never had any pumpkin in it....until now!

This Friday, our Pumpkin Spice is going into a latte at every Counter Culture Coffee training center in the country! Counter Culture has hosted Tasting at Ten events for nearly three decades. It’s free, it starts at 10 a.m. every Friday, and anyone who wants to learn (or taste!) more is welcome.

For our latte, the team is pouring Cinco de Junio, a light-roasted single origin from an organic cooperative in Las Sabanas, Nicaragua. Counter Culture tastes apple, dark chocolate, and almond in the cup. Those notes give the spices something to hold onto. Clove and dark chocolate get along well. So do apple and cinnamon.

The syrup below is what the baristas will use to build each drink: our Pumpkin Spice simmered with pumpkin puree and dark brown sugar, then finished with sweetened condensed milk. Can’t make it to a training center? Grab a bag of Cinco de Junio and a tin of Pumpkin Spice, and you can make the same latte at home.

A note from Asheville's Regional Manager, Kelli Allen (who crafted this magical syrup for us to enjoy): "Since scaling down tiny spice amounts can be tricky, this recipe yields a small batch of syrup which can be stored up to one week to satisfy your ongoing PSL needs!"

  • Ingredients

    • 2 cups water
    • 1 can (15 oz) pumpkin puree
    • 1 cup dark brown sugar (packed)
    • 1 vanilla bean (opened with the insides scraped out) or 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
    • 1 Tbsp Spicewalla Pumpkin Spice
    • 1 can (14 oz) of sweetened condensed oat or dairy milk

    Preparation

To make the Pumpkin Spicewalla Syrup

    1. Simmer: Combine the water, pumpkin puree, brown sugar, vanilla, and pumpkin spice in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
    2. Strain: Pour the hot mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a heat-safe measuring cup or mug to remove any thick pumpkin fibers.
    3. Combine: Stir in the sweetened condensed milk until fully blended.

To make a single drink: Pumpkin Spice Latte

    1. Pour 1oz. Pumpkin Spicewalla Syrup into your cutest mug.
    2. Add 2oz. of Counter Culture Coffee Espresso (they recommend Cinco de Junio for this latte)
    3. Steam 6 - 8oz. of your milk of choice and add to the mug.
    4. Garnish with a light sprinkle of pumpkin spice on top and get cozy!
