Edna Lewis' Mint Julep

Edna Lewis' Mint Julep

Source: Epicurious

Edna Lewis was a true icon, both in and out of the kitchen. It's no surprise that the signature drink at her 80th birthday party was the iconic mint julep, a classic American cocktail that packs a punch. In honor of Edna, the Spicewalla team recreated a few of her favorite things, like her buttermilk biscuits with strawberry preserves, and of course, her boozy beverage of choice---the mint julep.

Ingredients

1.5oz bourbon
6 mint leaves, plus more for garnish
2 teaspoons simple sugar syrup
crushed ice

Preparation

  1.  Dissolve 1/2 cup of sugar into 1/2 cup of water to create your simple sugar syrup.
  2.  Fill an 8-10 ounce glass with crushed ice (about 1 cup.)
  3.  Add mint, sugar syrup, and bourbon and bruise mint with the back of a spoon.
  4.  Stir everything together, and garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.
